This unit applies to those working as surfing guides or instructors in a range of controlled surf conditions. This may include those working for private outdoor adventure companies, schools, surf camps, or those working as surf lifesavers that run associated surf survival and awareness programs for students.

This unit may also apply to leaders working for outdoor education or adventure providers; volunteer groups; not-for-profit organisations or government agencies.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to perform simple rescues in moderate surf conditions. This unit focuses on the application of safe rescues and recoveries in moderate surf conditions.

Assessment must ensure participation in a variety of surf rescues and recoveries in moderate conditions to demonstrate competency and consistency of performance

Assessment must also ensure access to:

a surfing location with moderate conditions

other participants to assist with rescues

physical and human resources such as a rescue craft and lifeguards.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of surf environments, including types and features of waves and rips

observation of safe participation and demonstration of surf rescue and recovery techniques in prevailing conditions

third-party reports from a supervisor detailing performance.

Assessment Tasks

first aid, emergency and rescue procedures appropriate for the moderate conditions to ensure risk minimisation.
